Watch OPM Die and the Media Shame Ourselves

I miss the days when songs used to have "meaning"... inspiring lyrics that were carefully thought of. OPM used to be on top of radio charts, but now it seems like it's starting to be another part of history. Each day all you see is teens and kids going crazy over ridicuously composed songs which if not just repeating two to three lines over and over until it ends, promotes sex and flirting (in Filipino term, "kalandian"!). It was during the 70's 'til 90's when music of our own used to flourish. Every street corner knows of a couple of songs by The Eraserheads, Rico J. Puno, Sampaguita, Juan dela Cruz Band, Martin Nievera, and a whole lot more. Now ask a young one a favourite song of his and he/she'll sing you one of those God forsaken tracks by Bieber or Gaga. We brag of our Independence, our Culture... trying to incorporate those patriotic blue, red, white, and yellow on shirts and stuff. But shame that in music, seems to be another far option. When a teen is asked why he/she'd prefer that Western or Korean music, you'd usually get "baduy kasi pag tagalog". At an instant, if only I could smash that freakin' face and say, "tangna ka eh ano ka ba?". Is it really "baduy"? Or is it just that less effort is being put to our very own? Even our own stars and singers themselves rather sings foreign... why? Because it is the trend? They like it better? The mass prefers it? How can the majority prefer our own if they themselves wouldn't promote it and does the other way around. Like I was saying, our Nation brags about the Filipino Independence, the Filipino Culture... but watch us dominated and subdued with all those Western and Korean Pop and Hip-Hop music. The country may not be seized physically, but psychologically... one could say, we have been for such a time now. Furthermore, original compositions continue to diminish. We think that some of the songs we here are new, but guess again, those were just remakes of some of the greatest hits from the 50's 'til 80's. Are the people in the music industry tired of thinking of new songs, or is it just that they're starting to loose their ability to do so? Whatever their reason maybe, it is indeniably disappointing. Not that I dislike their remakes, those are good songs yes, but wouldn't it be better if they make more originals? Try and buy some of the new albums these days and you'll see that most of their tracks are remakes. What a drag. As what we used to hear, "music is the universal language" and "music is the key to our hearts", then trully it is a very strategic instrument to establish one's objectives. See it make a drastic change in our culture, the people's way of living. More and more youth today acts foolishly, mindlessly... Trying to imitate the liberated culture of the Western world not thinking first of the consequences. Watch them strip off themselves of the values that Filipinos used to have. Watch them wear those vulgar clothing that I couldn't help but say, "Gagu, nagdamit ka pa", or like what others say "dadamit damit ka ng ganyan tapos pag binastos ka magagalit ka". From where else would they get these things but from todays media. Well, I'll save this matter for another discussion. Will OPM continue to diminish, or would the time come when we would once again enjoy our own? This would depend not only on our artists but also ourselves. Success of Filipino music will not only depend on how much effort the artists would give to bring life to it but also the people who will support it once again...
