The Society and Its Distorted Reality

Since the early ages, there has always been a struggle against problems within the society; if not solving, escaping it. For the many, a better future is just another dream… shattered and soon forgotten.

Problems are found everywhere, at home, in the streets, in the office, within the government, and others in the darkest havens hidden – where crimes are an entertainment and a source of profit. Disgusting as it is but it seems that the problem is… the society.

“Our modern society is engaged in polishing and decorating the cage in which man is kept imprisoned” according to Indian monk, Swami Nirmalananda. We can’t deny that it is the society who creates all the loathsome problems we face until today. It is like breathing the stench of our own foul breath. Let me start discussing about our streets since it is a typical reflection of our society – busy, fast paced, enriched with wastes, filled with people of different classes; instilled with different kinds of drama. The streets portray how the society treats itself and its nation. One of the problems we see in our streets is street children. Kids crossing dangerous roads to sell sampaguita flowers and cigars, shoe cleaners in jeepneys, some asking for alms, and the worst are the rugby sniffers. I can’t help but wonder how did this came to be? Where are their parents? What is the government doing about it? Do they not see it? Or are they just pretending to be blind, neglecting the truths of today? Seriously, why don’t we ask ourselves, what can we do about it?

Still on our streets as soon as the sun sets, another set of people come to surface. Girls ranging from adolescent to adult, selling themselves and sacrificing their sanctity…for what? Money for their family? For their tuition fee? For their own personal needs? But why did they choose such a way. Again it points to poverty and greed of the wealthy. Some girls, think there isn’t any better way that’s why they engage themselves to prostitution. Others, unfortunately are forced by syndicates – some are kidnapped, while some are bought from their very own parents.

Another social issue is euthanasia. A nice example would be the recent topic about Dolphy, when his family had finally decided to perform the so called “mercy killing” since there seems to be no hope for his recovery. Euthanasia had always been a topic on debates. People with different views and different perspectives, arguing over the single matter if it is righteous and reasonable enough. Many believe that it is reasonable enough that prolonging one’s life, though there’s no hope for recovery, would just extend his suffering. Furthermore, it would at the end affect the whole family when their wealth and resources have all been used up.

Until now there is no solid solution to all these problems. Issues are still hanging, questions still unanswered. I say, not until each and every one of us does something about the problems we face, all these would remain as they are… and again inherited by the next generation of society.
